Jenson Button has taken his second win of the season. The Brit grabbed 25 points and finished in front of Vettel, Alonso, Hamilton and Mark Webber.
On the grid it was Sebastian Vettel who was on pole. Behind him were Hamilton, Button, Massa and Alonso. Overnight the weather changed quite a bit. After the completely dry conditions in qualifying some showers moved across Hungary. All drivers chose to start the race on intermediate tyres as rain continued to fall. Hamilton, who might have been a bit faster in qualifying, had to start on the 'green' side of the track. The starts at the support races have shown that it's a real disadvantage.
After a quick formation lap the drivers were ready to start. It was Vettel who had the best start as he was able to keep the lead. After the first corners it was the German leading Hamilton, Button, Rosberg, Schumacher and Alonso. Both Mercedes GP drivers had a great start. In the following laps though Alonso was able to pass them. Lewis Hamilton put pressure on Vettel and was able to pass the German for the lead in the 5th lap after Vettel went wide in turn 3.
In lap 10 the first drivers came in for dry tyres. It was Mark Webber who came in first. He was followed a lap later by Jenson Button. Webber was setting purple sector times when the front runners came in. After the stops Hamilton was leading Jenson Button and Sebastian Vettel. Button's tyres were a bit warmer than Vettel's and was able to overtake the German. In the following laps Hamilton continued to build a small lead.
Nick Heidfeld came in for his second pit stop in lap 23. The German exited the pit on fresh tyres but had to park his car immediately when flames came out of the side of his Renault. He jumped out of the car and marshals extinguished the flames. A small explosion in the side pod showed that a burning Formula 1 car is a very dangerous thing. With the fear of a possible safety car to clean the mess of Heidfeld most front runners came in in the following laps. Hamilton kept the lead in front of Button who was 7 seconds behind and Sebastian Vettel who followed at 13 seconds distance to Hamilton.
Fernando Alonso was the first to come in for new tyres. He went for his third and last set of super soft tyres. He was almost two seconds per lap faster than the other drivers who stayed out. After reaching the cliff of his tyre performance Lewis Hamilton also opted to go for the super softs while others went for the yellow soft tyres a few laps later. The performance of Hamilton's super soft wasn't great. Button and Vettel behind him were faster on their yellow soft tyres. A spin in the chicane turned things from bad to worse for Hamilton. He lost the lead to Button and Vettel was right behind him.
A gamble by Mark Webber and Lewis Hamilton to switch to intermediates after a few drops of rain didn't pay off. The times they were setting weren't faster than the people stayed out on dry tyres. Both were forced to make another stop and go back to the dry compounds. Hamilton got more bad news when he was dealt a drive-through penalty for an unsafe return to the track after his spin. It meant that Hamilton was 6th after leading the race just a few laps earlier. He was able to overtake Massa when he exited the and was just behind Mark Webber.
After getting some traffic in front of them Lewis Hamilton was able to overtake Webber. They had battled it out until they crossed the finish line. In front of them it was Jenson Button comfortably leading Vettel and Alonso. Button took his second win of the season.
